Controversial local artist turns to Anastasiades
Artist George Gavriel, whose controversial artworks landed him in trouble with the education ministry and the Church a few weeks ago, has produced another painting, showing President Nicos Anastasiades standing on a golden passport with halo around his head.
The artist told daily Politis he was inspired for his latest work by Anastasiades’ recent statements when he said last week during an interview he was “immaculate and unblemished” when asked if he felt responsible for the corruption on the island.
Anastasiades’ statements follow the revelations some two weeks ago by Al Jazeera news network that former House President Demetris Syllouris, Akel MP Christakis Giovani and lawyer Andreas Pittadjis told undercover journalists they would try to help a Chinese businessman with a criminal record acquire Cypriot citizenship. Syllouris and Giovani resigned after the scandal broke out.
Gavriel stirred angry reactions with his artworks last month with many accusing him of blasphemy especially for his painting depicting a naked Jesus but also for his take on national heroes.
He told Politis his latest artwork could be part of his exhibition currently underway in Gloria Gallery in Nicosia which has been extended until November 9.
