Hermes has opened a new distribution depot in West Thurrock as part of an investment programme to meet online shopping demand.
It said 140 new jobs had been created by the opening of the 157,000 sq ft warehouse on the Valor Park industrial site. The facility can handle 115,000 parcels each day and operates 24/7 if required.
Hermes said the new depot was necessary in light of continued growth in the sector and “huge demand” created by people shopping at home during the lockdown.
Sidonia Grigorie, Hermes depot general manager, said: “Our new team includes people from all kinds of professions who have been made redundant as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and being able to employ so many local people from the area has been really important for me.”
