The Vampire Diaries: 10 Unanswered Questions We Still Have About Damon
As the cool and chaotic Damon Salvatore became an instant fan favorite with his charm. Surprisingly there are still unanswered questions about Damon.
The final episode of The Vampire Diaries doesn't give all of the major characters happy endings, but it does give them hopeful ones. Even Stefan gets to ride off into the sunset with his best friend instead of enduring an eternity of torture. The series manages to finally dispose of its most enduring and destructive villain.
Damon and Elena get their happily ever afters both in life and death, But just because a series comes to a close, it doesn't mean fans are completely satisfied. There are always lingering questions left unanswered. Either past plot holes aren't entirely resolved or the future leaves room for interpretation which is the case when it comes to Damon Salvatore.
10 How Does Damon Adapt To Being Human Again?
Despite watching Damon go back and forth about taking the cure, according to Elena, she and Damon live a long, happy life together. But it's hard to forget that there was a time when Damon couldn't imagine anything worse than being human.
How does Damon adapt to life minus the perks of being a vampire? Does he buy a bar? How does he fill his days when he's no longer dealing with a constant onslaught of supernatural threats? Does the mundanity of paying bills and playing by the rules ever make him even momentarily regret his choice?
9 Does Damon Spend His Afterlife With Stefan?
In the final moments of the series finale, Elena and Damon walk hand in hand through Mystic Falls before he disappears, and Elena, after a split second of confusion, rejoices in reuniting with her family. Damon goes on to do the same with Stefan.
Does this mean that by finding peace elsewhere, Damon and Elena never see each other again? Is the vow "til death do us part" literal, or are their separate welcoming parties indicative of their respective afterlives? Could it be a pit stop on the way to somewhere else left to the audience's imagination?
8 Why Is Elena Sired To Damon?
After becoming a vampire at the start of season 4, Elena grows apart from Stefan, and her feelings for Damon intensify. But their coupling is short-lived when Caroline and Stefan become convinced Elena's suffering from a case of the sire bond. This storyline is confusing at best. Damon's blood doesn't have the same effect on Caroline, Isobel, Abby, or Vicki. Stefan even admits this is a rarely occurring phenomenon, but it somehow happens to Damon twice?
Tyler tells Caroline that the sire bond doesn't affect the way someone feels, only the way they act. Another argument thrown into the mix is that any feelings that exist before the transition from human to vampire are simply amplified. This feels like just another obstacle placed in the way of this ship setting sail because this particular loophole never arises in the show before, nor does it resurface later (aside from the Klaus-hybrid sire bond).
7 Is Damon Still In Love With Katherine At The Start Of Season 2?
Damon's obsession with Katherine supposedly ends during season 1 once he discovers she's not in the tomb. It becomes clear to everyone that Damon begins falling for Elena although Damon doesn't declare his love for her until later. But when Katherine returns to Mystic Falls on the season 2 premiere, it's clear her hold over Damon, albeit tenuous, still exists.
He's willing to forgive and forget everything she's done until Katherine denies ever having loved him, causing Damon to go off the rails which could be the result of Elena's rejection more than Katherine's. But all evidence points to Damon's lingering feelings it's hard for the woman who is at the forefront of his mind for 150 years.
6 Why Is It So Easy For Damon To Take The Cure?
The cure for vampirism is a game-changer in season 4, especially since there is only one dose. After Elena shoves it down Katherine's throat, the only way for Silas to become mortal is to practically suck Katherine dry. During season 6, Stefan tells Damon he and Elena will have to live off the grid because if word of the cure spreads, both their lives will be in danger. The threat is so legit, that after Kai's spell takes effect, the Salvatore brothers hide her body.
By the time season 8 rolls around, all it takes is a syringe full of Elena's blood to cure Enzo, Stefan, and Damon (and likely Rebekah). What happened? When did the circumstances surrounding extracting the elixir from Elena become so simple? Since Silas' more aggressive approach leads to Katherine's accelerated aging, does it mean that if Damon cuts himself shaving, he could suffer a similar fate?
5 How Many People Does Damon Turn Into Vampires?
Throughout the series, Damon sires Isobel, Caroline, Vicki, Abby, Elena, Charlotte, and Caroline's father, Bill Forbes (If he had chosen to make the transition.) He doesn't always consciously choose to do so as is the case with Caroline, Elena, or Bill.
Sometimes he does it out of boredom, sometimes it's just because an attractive woman asks him to do so and sometimes he acts out of necessity. So what is Damon's actual tally when it comes to turning the living into the dead?
4 Why Doesn't Damon Kill Katherine After She Becomes Human?
Damon has ample opportunities to kill Katherine, but she either has leverage that prevents him from doing so, or she promises to be useful in some way. But when Katherine shows up human and vulnerable, he offers her his blood to make her immortal once again. He has to keep her alive thanks to Silas, but after she survives the cure being drained from her body, nothing is stopping him.
Does he consider her low hanging fruit by this point? Does he think becoming human is punishment enough? Whatever the reason, it turns out to be an epic mistake since she continues to wreak havoc right up until she's consumed, along with Stefan, by hellfire.
3 Why Isn't Damon More Shocked The First Time He Meets Elena?
During the season 3 finale, Elena chooses Stefan over Damon, explaining to Damon that things might be different if they had met first. A flashback reveals they did; on the night of the accident that claimed both her parents' lives. The resemblance to Katherine isn't lost on him, but he's surprisingly chill about it, especially given he's been obsessing over Katherine for over a century.
Perhaps he chalks it up to coincidence since he's convinced Katherine is in the tomb. His reaction drastically differs from Stefan's who is immediately compelled to find out everything he can about Katherine's look-alike.
2 How Are Damon And Elena Able To Stay In Mystic Falls?
It's not just the cure pulsing through their veins that raises the question of how Elena and Damon can live out their days in Mystic Falls. When Stefan becomes human, everyone he ever compelled regains their memories, leading to a whole lot of trouble and an attempt on his life. Who knows where he'd be if Caroline and Matt didn't do damage control?
If this happens to Stefan, then there's no way Damon's bad behavior doesn't come back to haunt him as well. Elena isn't an angel during her short tenure as a vamp, but her list of misdeeds is far shorter. How does Damon escape the repercussions for his actions? Does Caroline come to the rescue again, or does he just leave behind fewer loose ends?
1 Does Damon Tell Elena He Murdered Tyler?
Damon does a lot of terrible things to good people, including members of Elena's inner circle. But under Sybil's influence he crosses a line by killing Tyler (arguably the most disposable) during season 8. Matt says it himself, "Humanity or not, nobody would forgive you for that." It's Damon's "screw you" to anyone who still has faith he'll come around.
Damon gets another free pass at least from his brother, Caroline, and Bonnie, but does he ever tell Elena? If she can fall in love with him despite him trying to kill Jeremy, Bonnie, Caroline, Matt and successfully murdering countless others, could she accept the extenuating circumstances and let bygones be bygones, or is the past better left buried?
