Don't Worry, The PlayStation 5 Controller Has An Audio Jack
A PlayStation product manager confirms the PlayStation 5 controller will come with an audio jack after its initial reveal looked like it wouldn't.
The PlayStation 5 controller will have an audio jack after all, meaning players can plug in their own headsets like they did with the DualShock 4 previously to customize their comfort and audio experience with the new console. The PS5 DualSense controller was revealed earlier this week and immediately became the most talked about item in the industry thanks to a dramatic departure in aesthetic from its predecessors.
The PlayStation 5 controller isn't the only element of the console that's been talked up over the last few weeks, either, as Sony's slow trickle of information about its next-gen device is finally starting to bear fruit. While Xbox's deep dive into the Xbox Series X made it a hot topic at the time, Sony's PS5 has been steadily discussed without much pause thanks to the company's slow approach. While the PS5 full specs were made available recently, it was the PlayStation 5 SSD that stole the show, as industry insiders and developers all worked to hype up the hardware as perhaps the most important feature in both the console and in next-gen game development in the future.
Perhaps it was all the futuristic sentiment surrounding the PlayStation 5 controller - and a reveal that only provided a few glimpses at what it looks like - that had fans worried the PS5 DualSense wouldn't have an audio jack, as has been the case with many modern cellphone designs. PlayStation product manager Toshimasa Aoki took to Twitter to clear up consumer concern over the PlayStation 5 controller, however, immediately putting to rest any fears that the DualSense wouldn't allow players to use their favorite headset.
In the grand scope of the PlayStation 5 controller design, an audio jack might not seem like the biggest inclusion, but it's a welcome one for consumers who have grown tired of designs that immediately invalidate a large portion of audio tech to this day. Plenty of fans provide wired headsets to wireless, for instance, whether its because of a perceived quality bump or the ability to always have it functional without needing it to be recharged. Whatever the reasoning, though, Sony fans can rest assured that the PlayStation 5 controller will not be eschewing an audio jack when it releases alongside the PS5 during the 2020 holiday season - though it remains unclear exactly where this audio jack is.
With that particular facet of the PlayStation 5 controller cleared up, consumers will probably turn back to a consistent sticking point over the last few months - getting a look at the actual PS5 itself. The white DualSense reveal makes it seem like the PlayStation 5 will be a base-white model rather than the black fans have grown accustomed to across three generations of devices, but more than color, consumers want a sense of the console's aesthetic. Hopefully that will happen soon but, with Sony's approach to PS5 details still one that's moving glacially, it may be a while yet before fans get a look at what will be competing with the Xbox Series X later this year.
