Former Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has agreed a deal in principle to become Everton’s next manager, according to a report.
The Toffees have been searching for someone new in the dugout after Marco Silva lost his job earlier this month, although interim head coach Duncan Ferguson has inspired his side to an upturn in form since being promoted to his current role.
Reports earlier on Monday claimed that Ancelotti – who is Everton’s number one target – flew into Liverpool to hold talks with the club’s hierarchy about taking over at the helm.
According to Sky Sports News, those talks progressed well and Ancelotti has agreed – in principle for now – to succeed Silva.
It is also claimed that the Italian could be announced ahead of Everton’s EFL Cup quarter-final clash with Leicester on Wednesday.
Should that happen, it is said that Ferguson will drop back to a role in the first-team coaching set-up.
Everton previously revealed that Ferguson was to remain in charge for the game against the Foxes, although the latest report suggests that Everton are keen to bring Ancelotti straight in soon after concluding talks with the 60-year-old.
Ancelotti, who lost his job with Napoli last week despite guiding the Serie A club to the last 16 of the Champions League – won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Community Shield during his time at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea between 2009 and 2011.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are looking for a new manager and the Italian has been linked with the job in North London.
However, Jamie Carragher has explained why he thinks the Gunners should steer clear and go for someone else.
“I don’t think Ancelotti has ever really been into clubs before and taken a group of players like this,” he said.
“He’s always gone to top teams where it’s more about man-management and getting the best out of real top players, getting them onside.
“I think a lot more is needed here – this is a rebuilding job.”
