Continuity concerns? 49ers’ Saleh has a few
Dee Ford has only participated in three training-camp practices.
Nick Bosa may not practice for several more weeks.
And both DeForest Buckner and Arik Armstead have missed several practices this summer with minor ailments.
Is coordinator Robert Saleh concerned about the lack of work his potentially fearsome defensive line will have together before the season opener at Tampa Bay on Sept. 8.
“As a coach,” Saleh said. “I’m always paranoid.”
Adding to the continuity concerns: The 49ers have a new defensive line coach Chris Kocurek.
“You’ve got new nuances of the different things that he’s teaching, especially from a game standpoint,” Saleh said. “If you’re working at (defensive tackle) and you’re trying to create that continuity … Do I think it will hinder us from being able to get after the passer? No, I don’t feel like it will be too bad. But I feel like there’s going to be an adjustment.”
The good news for the 49ers is that Buckner and Armstead were practicing together Tuesday after Armstead made his return from a calf injury. And Ford, who hasn’t practiced since July 30 due to knee tendinitis, could return to practice next week. Bosa’s status for the season opener is in question due to a severe ankle sprain.
“We’re going to have a high ceiling once those guys get back,” Saleh said. “But (we’re) trying to … master the relationship they have with one another so they can operate at very high level.”
Of course, Bosa is a rookie, but the edge rusher who was the No. 2 pick is unusually polished for a first-year player.
