Anyone who thought the final season has been slow up until this point are probably going to get more than they bargained for with this next episode. The battle against the Night King promises to be a bloody one that will mean the deaths of some key characters. And Episode 2 helped give some hints to who might not make it to Episode 4. Here are the characters most likely to die in Episode 3 of Game of Thrones.
10 Ghost
Direwolf fans were excited to see Jon’s pet, Ghost, finally make a reappearance after so long. The show has been pretty sparring with how often they use the direwolves, choosing to spend more time and money on dragons. And while it is great to see Ghost again, the show reminding us he’s still around is probably not a good sign.
The show seems to take any opportunity to kill off the direwolves just to get them out of the way, and a massive battle with the undead seems like a pretty good opportunity. Bet on Ghost rushing straight into battle and taking a few of the enemies down before dying himself.
9 Gendry
Gendry’s reintroduction to the story last season was a welcome surprise and fans were eager to see him reunite with Arya after so long. That reunion culminated in the two finally getting together in Episode 2 as they face the impending doom. That might be what seals Gendry’s fate.
Everyone knows that falling in love right before a major battle puts a character in danger. While Arya is in the same boat, we could see her fighting her way out of this to live another day. Gendry, on the other hand, has done his part to help create the weapons and there's not much left for him. Sadly, he is expendable.
8 Beric Dondarrion
Technically, this wouldn’t be the first time Beric died, but he’s likely to stay dead this time. Ever since Thoros of Myr died, Beric lost his path to resurrection and it seemed like only a matter of time before he was gone for good.
Given his faith in the Lord of Flight, you can bet Beric will be front-and-center in the battle with his flaming sword. He seemed far too excited about the coming fight in the last episode so we’re sure he’ll go out fighting in service to his god.
7 Dolorous Edd
Dolorous Edd is one of the most surprising characters to have made it this far in Game of Thrones. While the other Night’s Watch members dropped like flies, the cynical Edd always seemed to find his way out of trouble.
It’s nice that the show gave him the opportunity to reunite with his sworn-brothers, Jon and Sam, so they could reminisce about how far they’ve come and what they’ve been through. But that’s probably going to be it for Edd. He’s had a good run but with the Night’s Watch no more, he doesn’t seem like someone that will last much longer.
6 Tormund Giantsbane
Tormund is one of the craziest characters in the show. The wildling warrior is as insane as he looks, and that insanity has served him well thus far. He’s survived climbing the Wall, the Battle of Castle Black, the Battle of the Bastards and the collapse of the Wall. But even a madman like Tormund will have a tough time making it through this next fight.
Tormund got a fair amount of screen time in the last episode, continuing to flirt with Brienne and even getting to share his origin story. Now seems like the right time for him to finally meet his end.
5 Missandei
Grey Worm and Missandei have long been a background love story in the show. After Daenerys came to Westeros, their roles as her trusted advisers began to shrink considerably which always puts characters in danger. They pretty much guaranteed something bad would happen after making plans for the rest of their lives together in Episode 2.
While it would make sense that Grey Worm would die, considering we’ll be doing much more fighting, it seems more poetic that it would be Missandei who perishes. He death might then lead Grey Worm to fulfill his promise to go protect the people of Narth.
4 Theon Greyjoy
Theon Greyjoy is one of the most complex characters the show has had. While his arrogance and stupidity did a lot of damage earlier in the series, he has slowly been on the path of redemption ever since seizing Winterfell.
It makes sense that Theon would find his final redemption in his former home, this time fighting to protect it. His reunion with Sansa helped remind us of his past good deeds and his volunteering to protect Bran from the Night King pretty well cements his fate to die with honor.
3 Jorah Mormont
Jorah Mormont has been a key character in the series since its beginning, and we could previously have seen him surviving to the end. However, given his appearance in the last episode, it certainly feels like the show is setting him up for his last stand.
We saw Jorah put aside his feelings for Daenerys and counsel her to keep Tyrion as her Hand. We saw him help mend his broken relationship with his family while speaking to Lyanna Mormont. And we saw him receive a Valyrian steel sword from Sam. Armed with that weapon, we could see Jorah facing off with the Night King and losing.
2 Brienne Of Tarth
We don’t like it anymore than you do, but Brienne – now Ser Brienne – is a goner. She received a knighthood, something she has wanted forever, right before going into battle. That just spells doom.
Brienne is one of the most skilled fighters in this battle and she is armed with a Valyrian steel sword which gives her an advantage, but she is also going to be at the head of the army. With Jamie fighting beside her, expect the two to share a tender moment before she dies.
1 Bran Stark
Before the season began, we were promised that the Night King had a specific target in mind when he invaded Westeros. While there were plenty of possibilities, it has been revealed he has his sights set on Bran. It makes sense as there is a definite connection between the Night King and Bran and they seem destined to come face-to-face.
Bran elects to be the bait for their enemy, luring him out to be killed. However, nothing on Game of Thrones ever goes so easily so the Night King will probably succeed in killing him. With all the secrets now out in the open, having Bran and his abilities around any longer feels like a cheat.
