Our Anthem and November 11th (16 replies)
With Nov 11th 2018 coming - the 100th anniversary of the end of the carnage that was WW1, I wonder if we might mark the occasion at St Andrews?
We play Hull at home on the 10th Nov - what about the club bringing in a top class tenor singer and just before the game starts, we all stand and sing this song as a memorial and tribute to the fallen? We'd need the words to appear on the screens so that we sing the original - it was written by a Scottish music hall singer, Harry Lauder, as a tribute to his son who was killed in WW1. There could be a bit in the programme about this and the words printed there as well.
I'm sure Hull supporters would respect the occasion - both teams could wear black arm bands in tribute.
Not the point, but the club's PR people could drum up interest about the link between Blues and this song and it would give us some much needed very positive press.
I'd like to think that no-one among our supporters would try to hi-jack the memorial by singing 'our words' - we can do that during the game as we always do.
It is a very poignant song, especially when you realise its background and what it must have meant. No wonder my grandad (who managed to survive the war as a soldier) sang it with such meaning on the Kop terrace.
