Democrats determined to be ready for governor nominee
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Democrats will have a candidate to take on Republican Gov. Scott Walker — someday — and the party is determined to put its weight behind that candidate as quickly as possible.
As nearly a dozen major candidates skirmish to be the nominee, the party is raising money and building its field operation to support the winner of the Aug. 14 primary.
The uncertainty has made it hard for candidates to raise money, and the party fears the nominee could be in a big hole by late summer.
Tom Russell, who ran Russ Feingold's unsuccessful Senate campaign in 2016, is leading an effort for the Democratic Governors Association to raise money for the eventual nominee.
