Mae West, Cary Grant sizzle in ‘She Done Him Wrong’ at Stanford Theatre
Until Rhett Butler said, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn” in 1939, a good case could be made that Mae West’s invitation to Cary Grant, “Why don’t you come up some time and see me?” was the movies’ most famous line.
Not that it’s a great line in and of itself; its memorable sauciness was conveyed in context — that of an older woman (West was 39) unapologetically asking a 28-year-old hunk up for sex. That was the way the Pre-Code films rolled, and “She Done Him Wrong” (1933), made the year before a lot of the fun went out of movies, is one of the best.
