Tulsa Upsets OSU to End Long Drought in Stillwater
Oklahoma State's football team was upset by Tulsa 19-12 at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater on Friday night, ending a 10-game winning streak over the Golden Hurricane and 23-game home winning streak to TU.
It was Tulsa's first win in Stillwater since 1951.
The Golden Hurricane got a touchdown on their opening drive, then kicked four field goals for the remainder of their points.
Former OSU running back Dominic Richardson ran for 146 yards on 31 carries for Tulsa, while TU quarterback Baylor Hayes completed 23 of 36 passes for 219 yards.
OSU quarterback Zane Flores was 25-for-40 for 214 yards and rushed for 56 yards and a score.
Tulsa converted three key fourth downs, while OSU was just 1-for-4 on fourth down and 4-for-15 on third down.
The Cowboys got the ball to start the game and moved the ball into Tulsa territory, getting gains of 14 yards by Rodney Fields, 15 yards by Zane Flores and 13 more from Fields.
The drive bogged down after that and OSU had to settle for a 35-yard field goal by Logan Ward to go up 3-0 with 11:45 left in the first quarter.
Tulsa responded with a 6-play, 75-yard drive highlighted by two big plays.
Baylor Hayes found Brody Foley for a gain of 42 yards, then the drive was finished by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Hayes to a wide open Braylin Presley in the end zone, giving TU a 7-3 lead with 9:36 left in the first quarter.
OSU went three downs and punted on the ensuing possession, and Tulsa answered with another scoring drive.
TU moved to the Cowboy 9-yard line, but had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Seth Morgan to extend the Golden Hurricane lead to 10-3 with 2:41 to play in the first quarter.
After another OSU punt, Tulsa added to their lead with a 16-play drive that ate up over 6 minutes off the clock.
Morgan kicked a 38-yard field goal to give the Golden Hurricane a 13-3 lead with 7:49 to play in the first half.
After another Cowboy punt, Tulsa drove to another field goal.
Hayes passed to Zion Booker for 17 yards and Presley gained 20 yards.
It set up a 47-yard field goal by Morgan to make it 16-3 Tulsa with 2:32 left in the second quarter.
OSU gained just 16 yards on their ensuing possession, then punted again.
Tulsa ran out the clock to end the first half.
The Hurricane got the ball to start the second half and marched to more points.
Dominic Richardson gained 19 yards on a run, and Hayes found Zion Steptoe for 16 yards.
That helped set up a 47-yard field goal by Morgan to make it 19-3 Tulsa with 11:14 left in the third quarter.
OSU moved the ball on their next possession, but on 4th and 10 from the Tulsa 37, Flores scrambled for just five yards and the Cowboys turned the ball over on downs.
Tulsa gave the ball back with their first full possession that failed to produce points, as Richardson fumbled on a hit by Parker Robertson and Dylan Smith recovered for OSU at the Tulsa 42-yard line.
OSU moved to the Tulsa 5, but on 4th and 1, Rodney Fields was stuffed for a loss of a yard and once again the Cowboys turned the ball over on downs.
Fields led OSU in rushing with 113 yards.
For the first time in the game, OSU forced a Hurricane punt, after just three downs by Tulsa.
The Cowboys then marched to their first touchdown against an FBS team since last November, when they went 65 yards in 7 plays, with Flores keeping from 5 yards out for the score.
Flores was intercepted on the 2-point conversion play and it was 19-9 Tulsa with 14:14 to play.
After three straight combined possessions ended in punts, OSU got a 49-yard field goal from Logan Ward to cut Tulsa's lead to 19-12 with 5:49 left.
OSU forced a Tulsa punt, but turned the ball back over on downs, as Flores passed incomplete on 4th and 5 from the OSU 39-yard line.
Tulsa milked the clock down, then missed a 50-yard field goal attempt, giving OSU the ball back with 26 seconds left.
OSU picked up 26 yards on two plays, then after two incompletions left just 2 seconds on the block.
Flores completed a pass to Christian Fitzpatrick, who lateraled to Gavin Freeman, who got to the Tulsa 10, but was knocked out of bounds to end the game.
OSU drops to 1-2 on the season and has lost 11 straight games to FBS teams.
The Cowboys open Big 12 play next Saturday by hosting Baylor at 2:30 pm.
