Mercedes’ appeals against the result of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, which saw Red Bull’s Max Verstappen’s win the world championship, were rejected by stewards on Sunday. However, Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes team announced their intention to lodge one final appeal against the result. The elderly made up just 6% of all new COVID-19 cases detected last week, fresh EU data has shown. The figures, which cover the week ending December 5, showed that while Malta continued to detect higher numbers of new cases than previous months, the older cohorts continued to be much less impacted than the rest of the population. According to the data, published weekly by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, just 40 of the 663 cases found in the week under review were patients aged over 65. The Nationalist Party has requested the Naxxar mayor to resign because of an "undeclared conflict of interest". The request follows the mayor's vote in favour of a massive residential and commercial complex on the parking lot of the former Naxxar trade fair grounds. The approved project will be split into two elliptical blocks - measuring eight and 10 floors high - and will include a public open space in between the two towers. Czech cellist Lucie Kuchařová will perform the famous Bach Cello Suites during a lunchtime concert organised by the Borocco Foundation on Tuesday, December 14, at St Catherine of Italy church, Valletta. Max Verstappen became the first Dutchman ever to win the Formula One world championship title when he won a dramatic season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday. Malta won its second medal at the IWF World and Commonwealth Championships when weightlifter Yazmin Zammit Stevens took a bronze medal in the Commonwealth category of her event. A group of 57 Church-led institutions and NGOs are asking the government to listen to their concerns about the cannabis legislation currently making its way through parliament and to adopt the amendments they are recommending. The bill would decriminalise cannabis and allow people to carry up to seven grams of the substance on their person and up to four plants in their homes. Another 78 new COVID-19 cases were detected overnight while the number of virus patients in hospital dropped to 16. Two of those hospitalised patients require intensive treatment. On Saturday, there were 21 virus patients in hospital, with three at Mater Dei Hospital’s ITU. 111 new virus cases were reported that day.  One new death, of an 82-year-old man, was reported over the past 24 hours.
