British MP dies after being shot and left bleeding in street

Labour MP Jo Cox has died after being shot and stabbed in the street outside her constituency advice surgery. The mother of two was attacked by a man reportedly shouting "Britain first" at lunchtime in Birstall, West Yorkshire. Temporary chief constable for West Yorkshire Dee Collins told a news conference: "I am now very sad to have to report that she has died as a result of her injuries." Share Index registers 3-day positive streak

The share index extended the gains of the past two trading sessions as it edged up by 0.25 per cent to a two-week high of 4,460.231 points. Trading activity remained subdued with only €0.16 million worth of shares changed hands today. Just over half of the total value of equities traded today took place in Bank of Valletta. The share price gained 0.9 per cent to the €2.23,5 level across 37,720 shares. HSBC also performed positively today as the equity recaptured the €1.60 level on volumes totalling 10,896 shares. Man falsely accused of sexual abuse inspires Private Member's Bill

The Opposition has filed a Private Member’s Bill giving the Criminal Appeal Court the power to re-investigate cases referred to it where it would be proven that justice would have been badly administered. The Bill was inspired by the case of Emanuel Camilleri, a man whose life was turned upside down after being falsely accused of sexual abuse. The motion was filed by shadow minister Jason Azzopardi, and was presented to Speaker Anġlu Farrugia today. Court expert controversy rages on

A controversy over the appointment of court expert Martin Bajada has been referred to the Constitutional Court at the request of defence lawyers representing two men set to face trial on drug trafficking charges. The case revolves on an Appeals Court judgment handed down last April which cast a shadow on the integrity of Mr Bajada. Former Labour deputy leader Toni Abela has been ordered to pay €2,000 in damages over the contents of an opinion piece published in the party’s Sunday paper Kullħadd in 2012. The article, penned by Silvio Gonzi, had accused then PBS news editor Natalino Fenech of blatant political bias, describing him as the government’s “chief gatekeeper”. A trade fair, suspended following a dispute with the Planning Authority, is back on after Economy Minister Chris Cardona gave a “special concession”, according to the chamber of small businesses. Young teenage girls experiencing family conflict or with symptoms of depression are more likely to engage in activities associated with eating disorders, such as counting calories and skipping meals, according to a new study. Those who had more conflicts at home were also more prone to dieting behaviors. Feeling depressed explained at least a part of that connection, according to the study authors. Alfred Mifsud denies corruption claims, sues for libel

Alfred Mifsud, deputy governor of the Central Bank, has categorically denied allegations of corruption and money laundering made against him in a blog written by Daphne Caruana Galizia. Rescuers train for natural disasters

Malta’s Civil Protection Department has joined forces with their counterparts from Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Austria for training to deal with natural disasters, such as earthquakes. A training exercise is being held at Għajn Tuffieħa on preparing shelter accommodation in case of emergency. This is the first of a series of training exercises planned to be held in the five countries. Captain and company director fined for belated tuna fish declaration

The captain of a Libyan-registered fishing vessel who declared his tuna catch to the Maltese authorities belatedly was fined €6,000 by a court after pleading guilty. Furthermore, the court slapped the director of an aquaculture company who also filed an admission with a €1,000 fine. The  incident happened on the night of June 10 when the captain of the fishing vessel named Cyrene, 55-year-old Francesco Novella from Salerno, called into a Maltese port carrying four tuna fish each weighing 100 kilos. No UEFA committee meeting called, England in the clear

European soccer's governing body UEFA said today it was planning no Executive Committee meeting in the wake of overnight fan violence on the streets of Lille. UEFA's decision effectively means England are not under any threat of disqualification over their fans' behaviour. Hackers hijack Isis Twitter sites with gay messages, porn

The hacker-activist group known as Anonymous has hacked into dozens of pro-Isis Twitter accounts and infused them with gay pride images as well as pornography in response to the Orlando mass shooting. Profile pictures of Isis supporters have been changed to images containing slogans like 'I'm gay and proud' and their cover photos replaced by canoodling semi-naked men. Cliff Richard will not face sex crime charges

Singer Cliff Richard, one of Britain's best-known entertainers, will not face charges over alleged historical sex crimes because there is not enough evidence, prosecutors said. Britain's Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) was handed a file of evidence by police in May relating to allegations against Richard, 75. "The CPS has carefully reviewed evidence relating to claims of non-recent sexual offences dating between 1958 and 1983 made by four men," said Martin Goldman, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Yorkshire and Humberside. The Women’s Rights Foundation has filed a judicial protest against the State demanding licensing, importation and distribution of emergency contraception to be made legal. Air Malta has called on the police to investigate "serious allegations" which it said were made by made by head of the pilots' union during a meeting with the leader of the Opposition. The annual rate of inflation in May went up to one per cent, from 0.8 per centregistered in April.The NSO said today that on a monthly basis, the rate of one per cent was registered in May 2016, down from 2.6 per cent registered in April 2016. He's been called the Golden State killer and the East Area Rapist and for 40 years he's remained on the loose. Now the FBI's offering a $50,000 reward in the hope they can finally hunt down the man accused of 12 murders and 45 rapes in California. 53 per cent of Britons back Brexit - new poll

A telephone poll by Ipsos MORI showed 53 percent of Britons would vote to leave the European Union in a referendum due on Thursday, the Evening Standard newspaper said. Excluding undecided voters, 47 percent of respondents want to remain in the bloc. Head of the first Roman emperor returned to Italy

A marble sculpture of Rome’s first emperor Augustus has been returned to the Italian capital some 40 years after it was stolen and smuggled out of the country. The marble head is one of the earliest known portraits of a man born more than 2000 years ago. The artifact was the latest piece to be repatriated to Italy’s ancient sites after being illegally trafficked abroad. The artwork was welcomed back to its origins with a ceremony.
