SF Police: Officer shoots, kills suspect in Market Street stabbing
Officer shoots, kills suspect in Market Street stabbing A knife-wielding suspect who was in the act of stabbing a man on Market Street in San Francisco on Wednesday morning was shot and killed by a police officer walking a beat in the area, officials and witnesses said. Several blocks of Market street were shut down as police swarmed the area following the shooting around 11:22 a.m. A witness, Frank Ortiz, 68, told The Chronicle that he saw a police officer shoot a man in the chest on Market Street near Mason street. “These things, we really try to avoid them as much as we can, but we have a duty to protect the public,” said Scott, who was appointed police chief by Mayor Ed Lee about three months ago. The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management tweeted that Market Street was shut down in both directions around the 900 block, which is between Fifth and Sixth streets, and advised people to avoid the area at 11:34 a.m. The police activity disrupted many transit lines passing through Market Street, a major transit artery, with the agency suggesting riders choose subways over buses for inbound travel.
