Mitty boys handle Serra in CCS opener
With his brother watching from the stands, Mitty’s Kyle Peterson elevated his game Friday night and the Monarchs might have played their best contest of the season.
The senior guard scored a season-high 23 points as Mitty (15-10) rolled to a 70-46 Central Coast Section Open Division first-round win over Serra at Santa Clara University.
Peterson’s brother Connor, who along with Aaron Gordon led Mitty to state championships in 2011 and ’12, is a starting guard at Azusa Pacific, which is in the Bay Area for two games.
Kyle Peterson, known for his defensive prowess, sank four of his team’s 10 three-pointers as the Monarchs spread out the Serra defense and led from start to finish.
[...] at Santa Clara, Wrenn Robinson had 15 points and Matt Redmond, Teddy Snyder and Darrion Trammell chipped in 10 points apiece for the second-seeded Wildcats (20-5), who held off a late rally by the seventh-seeded Chieftains (22-3) in the CCS Open Division game.
Junior Logan Johnson (18 points) and senior Jake Mihanovic (14 points) were their usual selves, but it was the play of Tyler Manoa (eight points, eight rebounds), Oscar Pedraza-V (12 points) and Maurice Wilmer (eight points) that proved decisive for St. Francis, which trailed 14-3.
In North Coast Section Division 1 quarterfinal play, Montana-bound Tim Falls had 24 points and Robby Beasley 17 for the top-seeded Gaels (27-3), who held off the visiting Panthers (16-11) despite Kirmarje Trent’s 32-point effort.
Anthony Dennis had 15 points to lead four Patriots in double figures as host Heritage (25-3) beat the Ugly Eagles (21-7), who got 18 points by Garrett Pascoe.
Sacred Heart Cathedral 70, Eastside Prep-East Palo Alto 66:
In a battle of defending state champions, IImar’I Thomas had 20 points, Jayden Benitez 13 and Errayanna Hatfield and Yaniah Fleming added 10 apiece for the second-seeded Irish in a first-round CCS Open Division game at Gunn High in Palo Alto.
At Gunn, Hannah Jump drilled eight three-pointers and scored a career-high 36 points as the Panthers (23-2) beat the Wildcats (17-8) in the CCS Open Division game.
At Christopher High in Gilroy, Haley Jones had 21 points and 19 rebounds and Daniella Gugliemo 17 points as the Monarchs (23-2) beat the Lancers (14-11) in CCS Open play.
