Riser led start to finish to win his 6-furlong debut at Golden Gate Fields, then set a blazing pace and faded to ninth in the 1-mile Zuma Beach Stakes on the grass at Del Mar.

Aqua Frio has two wins and four seconds in six starts — with two of the runner-up efforts coming in stakes races.

The other entrants are Uncle Grumpy, who has won three straight against lesser competition; Right Hand Man, who beat Aqua Frio by 2½ lengths in the Cavonnier Juvenile Stakes, and Silver Assault, who won his debut and finished third in two stakes at Santa Anita. …

Camino Del Paraiso broke his maiden in a previous trip to Del Mar on Aug. 17 in a 1-mile grass race — the same distance and surface as the Let It Ride Stakes.

Despite his half-length loss to Arrogate in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, California Chrome retained the top spot in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s Horse of the Year media poll.

Arrogate, who has won five of six starts but only two in stakes events, received the other 16 first-place votes and had 418 points.
