Will Smith the new Jeremy Affeldt in more ways than one
PHILADELPHIA - Somehow, the legend of Jeremy Affeldt and his frequent-guest card at the emergency room did not filter down to the home clubhouse in Milwaukee. New Giants reliever Will Smith had not heard about Affeldt's frozen hamburger, leaping child and water inflatable injuries. Smith was impressed, and Affeldt must be left wondering how he could get through 14 big-league seasons without getting hurt the way Smith did this spring training. Smith missed the first two months of the season recovering and wears a brace when he pitches. [...] he said Wednesday his knee is healed and he would not think about the injury at all if he did not need to don and remove the brace each day. Yeah, he heard about it from Brewers teammates. Smith was lying on the training table the morning after the injury when bullpen mate Tyler Thornburg grabbed the cleat, tossed it in the trash and tweeted a photo with the words, "We've got your back, Will." Like Affeldt, Smith was able to keep his humor ' 'Start wearing sandals' and all this stuff. The 27-year-old left-hander has had odd left-right reverse splits this year. Each outing I feel stronger. Manager Bruce Bochy said reliever Cory Gearrin's rehab from a shoulder strain is going well, and once he gets more Triple-A innings, "we'll have to find a place for him." The Giants did not take on-field batting practice because of a media softball game. Henry Schulman is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer. The Giants’ Aug. 21 home game against the Mets has been moved to 5:07 p.m. for “Sunday Night Baseball,” the sixth and final time the Giants can appear this season.
