Biology and the ascent of women
Joy Carlin directs, while Nancy Carlin and Martha Brigham play evolutionary biologists of different generations in Aurora Theatre’s West Coast premiere of “The How and the Why” by Sarah Treem, the award-winning writer and producer of Showtime’s “The Affair.”
In the intimate drama, presented in the Aurora’s smaller Harry’s UpStage space, the up-and-coming scientist’s views clash with those of her older colleague, an established leader in the field, on the fundamentals of what it means to be female.
Emotion tangles with evolution, and the difficult choices faced by women of every generation, in a drama so keenly anticipated that the Aurora has had to extend its run twice — before it even opened.
