Giants beat: Andrew Susac’s return gives Buster Posey a break
Andrew Susac’s return gives Buster Posey a break
ST. LOUIS — Is this the start of the Giants getting the band back together?
Rookie catcher Andrew Susac, who missed the previous 26 games with a thumb sprain, was activated from the 15-day disabled list for Monday’s game.
Manager Bruce Bochy ran Susac right into the staring lineup, giving Buster Posey the night off.
Susac had a go-ahead homer for Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday.
In his six-game rehab assignment he went 6-for-22, with two homers.
Susac said he feels his timing with the bat has come around and, “I started to take better swings the last two days.”
[...] you get to that point, you don’t want to wear him down where it’s going to take three or four days to get his legs back.
Susac was batting .241 with three homers when he went on the DL.
During his time away from the Giants, Susac also underwent root-canal work from an infection dating to spring training.
Expanded role?
Madison Bumgarner’s home run Sunday — and double, on a run-and-hit play — rekindled talk of using the pitcher as a hitter in certain situations.
“I’m not going to lie,” Bochy said, that last DH (opportunity) in Texas, I thought about (using Bumgarner as DH).
Bumgarner won his first-ever NL Player of the Week award after striking out a total of 26 batters in 3-1 and 5-0 complete-game wins over the Astros and Nationals, respectively.
Don’t try to get Bochy into the famed St. Louis Gateway Arch.
