Bond for $30 million sewer upgrades heads to ballot Nov. 6
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A $30 million fix for Burlington's aging sewer system is up for a vote next week.
The bond proposed on Tuesday's ballot aims to improve water pollution safeguards and to reduce the risk of beach closures. The Burlington Free Press reports Department of Public Works spokesman Rob Goulding says the department is opting to fast-track repairs if the bond is approved by voters.
Goulding says there is no "plan B" if the vote on the bond fails, but says the city will do what it can with the resources it has. Goulding says delays in upgrades would certainly result in more equipment failures — and ultimately, higher costs for future repairs.
The bond would be repaid through rate increases, alongside grants.
