Walmart’s shift on Cosmo
Walmart has removed Cosmopolitan magazine from its checkout aisles. Cosmopolitan will still be in the magazine section of the stores, but the magazine has been under heavy criticism from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, saying it “places women’s value primarily on their ability to sexually satisfy a man and therefore plays into the same culture where men view and treat women as inanimate sex objects.” A Cosmopolitan representative says the magazine focuses on empowerment and is “proud of all that the brand has achieved for women around the world.” Cosmopolitan’s parent company, Hearst, also publishes The Chronicle.
