UConn’s Geno Auriemma, UNC’s Sylvia Hatchell reach 1,000 career wins
Geno Auriemma picked up his 1,000th victory as top-ranked Connecticut beat Oklahoma 88-64 on Tuesday night in Uncasville, Conn., only hours after North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell recorded her 1,000th win.
Auriemma became the fourth women’s coach to reach the 1,000-win mark, joining the late Pat Summitt of Tennessee, Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer and Hatchell.
Auriemma is the fastest to achieve the mark, doing so in his 1,135th game. The Hall of Fame coach has gone 500-36 since getting his 500th victory in 2003. That includes winning 100 of his past 101 games.
Sitting by Auriemma’s side for the 1,000 wins has been associate head coach Chris Dailey.
