According to a report from The Information, GPT-5.4 is expected to support a context window of more than 1 million tokens, more than double the 400,000-token limit in GPT-5.2. Some speculation suggests the limit could go even higher. Dataconomy reported that leaked internal commits suggest the model may reach a two-million-token context window, though that figure has not been verified in OpenAI’s official code.

The expanded capacity would also bring OpenAI in line with rival AI models from Google and Anthropic that already support context windows of around 1 million tokens.

Extreme reasoning mode reportedly in development

Another potential addition attracting attention is a new feature described as an “extreme reasoning” mode.

However, the trade-off may be slower responses, since the model would take longer to process difficult queries. Sources cited by The Information also say GPT-5.4 is expected to perform better on tasks that run for long periods, sometimes several hours.

Such capabilities would be particularly useful for AI agents and automation tools. For example, OpenAI’s Codex programming assistant could leverage the additional memory and reasoning power to handle large-scale coding projects or complex debugging tasks.

Reports also suggest the model may improve its ability to track instructions and operational rules throughout lengthy interactions, lowering the chances of errors.
