Horn 'withdraws' from Commonwealth Games due to unspecified injury
JOHANNESBURG – South African women’s 100m record-holder Carina Horn bizarrely announced she would withdraw from the Commonwealth Games even though it was never confirmed she had formally been included.
In a statement from the TuksSport, it is revealed Horn had decided to withdraw from the South African team due to an unspecified injury.
“The Tuks-athlete is disappointed but said it would be foolish to risk aggravating it (the injury) especially since she is so close to becoming the first South African female sprinter to dip under 11 seconds,” the statement read.
Horn raced into the history books at this month’s South African Track and Field Championships when she broke the 28-year-old record national 100m record.
The 29-year-old Horn shaved 0.03 off the record she shared with Evette de Klerk, clocking 11.03 seconds in her semi-final at the South African championships on her home track at Tuks.
Horn was one of the glaring omissions when the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) announced the Commonwealth Games team in January.
She was rumoured to be a late inclusion along with shot-putter Orazio Cremona, who also did not make the initial team.
When Horn was asked about her plans for the rest of the season the day before the final Liquid Telecom Grand Prix Series in Paarl last week, she made no mention of the Commonwealth Games. She instead spoke about getting into a few Diamond League meetings.
Horn’s new personal best would have been good enough for a podium place at all of the past six Commonwealth Games.
