Top moments from the 2017 Golden Globes
In an homage to the biggest winner of the award show, Fallon and friends opened with a “La La Land”-like number, featuring Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”) spitting a Lifesaver into Fallon’s mouth before Fallon found his way to the stage of the cramped International Ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to host the first award show of the season. [...] the show got down to business, with Donald Glover accepting two awards for his boundary-busting comedy “Atlanta” on FX; Netflix’s “The Crown” collecting two wins over cult favorites “Game of Thrones,” “Stranger Things” and “Westworld”; and a victory for “Moonlight,” which won for best motion picture — drama. The musical took home a record-breaking seven awards, including best motion picture — musical or comedy, best original score and best original song. Meryl Streep, who was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” took her time in the spotlight to denounce the immature behavior of president-elect Donald Trump and to call for the protection of the creative arts as well as journalism. Ryan Gosling proved why he’s just about everyone’s dream guy during his touching acceptance speech. Upon winning best performance by an actor in a motion picture musical or comedy for his role in “La La Land,” Gosling gave “my lady” and mother of his two children Eva Mendes a shoutout. During the Globes’ opening number, Millie Bobby Brown of “Stranger Things” showed off her rap skills and revealed — SPOILER ALERT — that “Barb’s still alive.” [...] for the most awkward moment on the Golden Globes red carpet, the winner is Jenna Bush Hager. The “Today” show host and daughter of former President George W. Bush proved that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree when she mistakenly asked Pharrell Williams about his Globes nomination — for “Hidden Fences.” David Wiegand is an assistant managing editor and the TV critic of The San Francisco Chronicle.
