Top 5 UFC Upsets In the Foreseeable Future
Thanks for clicking, just a fight fan and martial arts enthusiast that hopes to one day become a writer. Here are my picks for upsets that could be coming up in the future of the UFC, please leave your own lists or criticism in the comment section below.
1. Michael Bisping vs Yoel Romero
With new UFC owners (WME-ING) being in the business of belts it seems like the next middleweight title fight to look forward to will be against the brash brit, Michael Bisping against the terrifying and polarizing Cuban missile that is Yoel Romero. Has there ever been a champion in recent UFC history that could honestly be considered an underdog against the majority of the top 10? With that being said I'll honestly say that at first thought after Romero left the former champion Chris Weidman as a bleeding, unconscious bundle on the UFC 205 canvas was that the reign of Michael Bisping would be very short lived. On second thought taking into account the possible problems Bisping could present with his volume striking, amazing cardio, takedown defense and unquestionable resiliency. I'm not telling you to bet the house but don't be surprised to wake up to see the results of this fight be a 48-47 unanimous decision in favor of The Count.
2. Daniel Cormier vs Anthony Johnson
Light heavyweight is without much argument a barren wasteland lacking hope of new prospects or contenders that can bring any refreshing spark of interest to the division in the near future. That doesn't mean that we can't enjoy the all-time classic styles match up of wrestler vs striker that is Cormier vs Rumble. Regardless of opinion DC is the undisputed champion and favorite over any other fighter that is active in the division. The first fight between these two showcased perfectly the dangers that each fighter present to the other and played out as a perfect example of how to smother out the flame that is the unhuman like power possessed by Anthony Johnson. DC was able to control the pace but not after enduring a very scary first round which put him into deep waters to swim out of. The biggest variable in my opinion between the two fights will be time. With Rumble seeming to enter into his prime of athletic ability and really showing his comfort as a fighter in his optimal weight class, DC could quite possibly be right passed the apex of the last unforgiving slope of the roller coaster ride that is his mma career.
3. Jacare Souza vs Tim Boetsch
These is easily my pick that has the least amount of belief behind it but also the most space for an "I told you so" standing on the couch moment. Souza is in a bizarre space in the middleweight division where he is rightfully a top contender but is only fighting to stay busy and stay relevant. I sincerely think the Brazilian alligator can very likely cruise over anyone in the top 15 but someone you don't often get an easy low risk fight out of is Mr. Boetsch. His upset win over the former middleweight contender Yushin Okami comes to mind with his ability to storm back in the third round and blast Okami into the land of lost souls with numerous clinch uppercuts that were as awkward as they were dangerous. It may seem very much like "bro science" but I for one will never doubt the ability to simply war that resides inside Tim Boetsch.
4. Rose Namajunas vs Michelle Waterson
The tides of momentum and fan request makes this fight almost a lock for the near future and I smell an upset in the making favoring the savvy veteran Michelle Waterson. It seems very possible that Rose controls from distance with her long kicking game and could also adapt to a striking heavy clinch approach fight that Waterson is likely to engage in. Maybe less than likely but also probable is Michelle's ability to control and avoid damage in the clinch leading to possible sweeps or even taking Rose down after catching one of her effective but also risky bare kicks out in open space. Women's MMA has been upset city lately so lets keep that train running while enjoying what is sure to be one of the most interesting match-ups in the division for quite some time.
5.Yair Rodriguez vs BJ Penn
Oh BJ, when is enough really considered enough. How many times do we have to jump on the belief bandwagon for The Prodigy to come back and show shades of the tight boxing game and phenomenal grappling ability that we all remember him for. Yair Rodriguez is someone that is to be taking seriously with his crisp yet risk embracing style of striking. Coincidently in order for this fight to fall into upset territory BJ will have to hope to pull off a similar game plan as the karateka on this list above him, Michelle Waterson. The biggest factor that will determine this fight is all inside of Rodriguez's ability to fight in a controlled and disciplined manner that will allow him to pick the Hawaiian legend apart from distance and recreate that silent somber ambiance in the arena that we were a witness to after the crushing defeat of BJ at the hands of Frankie Edgar years ago. If he rushes and fights with that young bravado fashion he very well might, we could just be in a theater 10 years from now watching an actor resembling him tapping to a poorly reenacted rear naked choke in the heavily edited biopic, Mahalo Miracle: The Story of BJ Penn.
