Campaign rhetoric, reality, clash in Trump's first-day plans. Repeal Obamacare? Build that wall? Naw
During the campaign, president-elect Donald Trump promised a long list of executive actions he’d take on his first day in office, which included:
- repealing Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act).
- pursuing a constitutional amendment to put terms limits on members of Congress.
- building that famous wall between the U.S. and Mexico and have Mexico pay for it.
But in a video released to the nation on Monday outlining the executive actions he intended to take on his first day in office, guess what, none of those items were on the list. It took less than two weeks for him or his aides to realize that saying what you plan to do as president, and actually getting it done, are two different things.
Notably absent from Trump’s announcement: His campaign promise to build a wall along America's southern border with Mexico. He did say, however, that he would "direct the Department of Labor to investigate all abuses of visa programs that undercut the American worker."
Trump also made no mention of the Affordable Care Act, after repeatedly vowing to repeal and replace it. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, the president-elect said he was considering retaining portions of the law.
What are some things he does intend to do on his first day? Send word that the U.S. plans to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement with 11 other countries that was pushed by President Barack Obama, formulate a rule to cut back on regulations, and:
Trump also promised to "cancel job-killing restrictions on the production of American energy — including shale energy and clean coal,” though he did not specify which restrictions he planned to eliminate. This step would create "many millions of high-paying jobs," he said.
So, he’s going to write a letter, think about a way to cut back on rules, and kill some restrictions, but he hasn’t said which ones. Wow. Impressive. Yuge.
