Palestinians Call For Facebook Boycott Over Censorship
Palestinians are now losing their freedom and place in cyberspace as well as in the space that was once their homeland. The world’s largest social media network has been deleting Palestinian accounts and posts at the behest of Israel for alleged “incitement”. Facebook has allowed Israel to delete any Palestinian content that they deem inappropriate. Palestinian activists have launched a campaign to boycott Facebook “We will not stop our campaign until Facebook withdraws from the agreement and respects international laws and standards safeguarding the freedom of opinion and expression.“ It appears that Israel controls Facebook. It is all happening at a time when the Palestinian voice is being heard by many on social media. Facebook has since restored some of the deleted accounts, saying that they made a mistake. Daily Sabah reports: Earlier this week, campaigners — using the hashtag #FBCensorsPalestine — called on supporters to refrain from posting on Facebook between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. (Jerusalem time) on Sept. 25. Hussam al-Zayegh, the campaign’s Gaza-based spokesman, told Anadolu Agency that the initiative had been launched in response to what he described as Facebook’s “pro-Israel bias”.
