The question the reader and his mother have since been concerned about is: what caused the fire? In their words, there was no power surge, no forgotten gas or stove on, in other words, nothing at all to ignite the fire.
The reader suspects the neighbour who his mother is at odds with to have set the house on fire.
The only suspect they have is the only neighbour who was home when the fire started, and who the mother is at odds with. However, there is no substantial evidence to prove her guilty.
