PDP national chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff
Past ministers who are also members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday, February 23, rejected the appointment of a former Borno state governor Ali Modu-Sheriff as its party’s national chairman.
In a communique from a meeting held by the PDP ministers’ forum, the ministers resolved that the appointment process of Modu-Sheriff is illegitimate.
The ministers also commended and supported the PDP board of trustees for rejecting “the imposition of Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff for lack of transparency and internal democracy in the process”.
The forum further called for the conduct of congresses at all levels of the party.

The congresses the ministers said will lead to a national convention which should be held before Monday, March 28 to return power to the people in tandem with the party’s constitution as encapsulated in the party’s motto: “Power to the People”.
“The forum condemns all acts of impunity in the running of the affairs of the party, at all levels and implores all members to respect the constitution of the party and that of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the communique stated.
The forum resolved to continue consultations with relevant stakeholder groups with a view to solving the present challenges and strengthen the party.

They also condemned the threat on one of its members, a former minister of aviation Femi Fani Kayode by the new chairman.
“The forum noted with dismay the threat on one of its members, Chief Femi Fani Kayode, by Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff. The forum considers a threat to one as a threat to all,” it said.
Modu-Sheriff had threatened the former aviation minister after Fani-Kayode called for his step down from the seat as the party’s national chairman over his credibility and link to the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists operating in the northeast.
While Fani-Kayode has said he does not feel intimidated by Modu-Sheriff’s threat, the former governor have also vowed to remain in his seat as the national chairman despite various oppositions from Nigerians, the party’s board of trustees and many members of the PDP.
Also, after a meeting between the PDP governors’ forum, the party’s board of trustees, the national assembly caucus, the party’s national working committee and the state caucuses, Modu-Sheriff was given a three-month mandate to lead the party.
He is expected to help the party plan its forthcoming national convention where a new national chairman will be duly elected.
