Josh Reddick wants to stay with the A’s
Oakland’s right fielder arrived in camp Tuesday, two days before position players’ reporting date, and he reiterated statements he made during FanFest — he would love a contract extension, but he doesn’t want any discussions during the regular season.
Me and my agents talked, and were told as soon as we got the one-year deal done, we were going to focus on that and here we are, still no numbers being thrown around.
General manager David Forst said that he and Reddick’s agents, Sam and Seth Levinson, have been playing phone tag for a few weeks, but that the team is more than open to talking about an extension.
“We’ve talked about the possibility of more than one year, but because of the deadlines involved with arbitration, we decided we would wait,” Forst said.
The A’s certainly have had no issues signing players to contract extensions during the season.
Should the A’s fail to sign him to an extension, he seems a likely candidate for a qualifying offer after the season if he puts up good numbers during the year.
Manager Bob Melvin likes the idea of having a few players who can provide long-term continuity.
Reddick spent much of the winter working with his charitable foundation in Georgia, which raised $50,000 for community services in Effingham County.
