Sliema win after five defeats
Sliema Wanderers ended a depressing run of five successive defeats when they edged past Tarxien Rainbows 1-0 at the Tedesco Stadium.
The first half was bereft of scoring opportunities. In fact the only attempt at goal came Tarxien’s way on 41 minutes when Montebello turned past his marker and his curling drive finished just over.
The game showed signs of improvement on the restart and on 48 minutes Tarxien were awarded a corner kick from which Bruno connected to Ayrton Azzopardi’s delivery but his header flashed just wide.
Sliema took the lead on 59 minutes when Johann Bezzina picked up a short clearance by the Tarxien defence and let fly a firm low drive that had the better of goalkeeper Andrea Cassar.
Tarxien almost levelled a minute later when from a corner action, Azzopardi’s cross-shot was somehow pushed away by Zammit.
The Rainbows tried to fight back but and a minute from time Montebello pounced on some poor defending from the Blues but the towering striker fired wide with only Zammit to beat.
