Lavrov, Araghchi discuss situation in Persian Gulf
ArmInfo. At the initiative of the Iranian side, a telephone conversation took place between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. They discussed the deteriorating situation in the Persian Gulf, which has been exacerbated by US and Israeli aggression.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry press service, Lavrov emphasized the categorical unacceptability of US-Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear infrastructure, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, which pose unacceptable risks to the safety of Russian personnel and are fraught with catastrophic environmental consequences for all countries in the region. Both sides expressed concerns about the dangerous spreading of the conflict provoked by Washington and Tel Aviv to the Caspian Sea. The Russian side noted the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a political resolution that takes into account the legitimate interests of all parties involved, primarily Iran. Russia will adhere to this stance in the UN Security Council.
Araghchi thanked the Russian leadership for its significant diplomatic and other support to the Islamic Republic of Iran, including humanitarian aid.
It should be noted that minutes earlier, US President Donald Trump announced that the US would hold off on striking Iran for five days following "productive" talks with Iran.
Meanwhile, Tehran stated that it had not held any negotiations with the US.
