Maia Sandu supports reunification with Romania
"If we had a referendum, I would vote for reunification with Romania, but right now the majority supports joining the EU, and we are working in that direction," she said, according to MOLDPRES.
In an interview with British journalists, she added that regional and global events are making the survival of countries like Moldova increasingly difficult, and EU accession is becoming a realistic goal for protecting sovereignty.
This is the first time a Moldovan president has publicly stated that she would vote for reunification with Romania if a referendum were held. "However, this issue will not find broad support among the political class, so the pursuit of European integration remains the only solution for the survival of the Republic of Moldova," the head of state explained.
During the discussion, Maia Sandu emphasized the growing challenges facing small states in the current geopolitical context. The head of state also spoke of threats posed by the Russian Federation, stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to expand his influence in Europe. According to her, the Kremlin's interference in the internal affairs of the European Union is much more profound than many European citizens realize.
