WBC Continental Americas featherweight champion Omar Trinidad (17-0-1, 12 KO’s) of Boyle Heights, California kicks off his 2025 campaign against tough veteran ‘Magic’ Mike Plania, (31-4, 18 KOs), of General Santos City, Philippines. Trinidad takes on Plania this Friday night at the Commerce Casino Events Center live on UFC Fightpass.
“I’m just ready to put on a great show for the fans, I’m excited,” Omar Trinidad told FightNews.com®. “It could be a short night, it all depends, what he brings if he wants to go to war or box. We are ready and we are not looking for the knockout, we are staying smart. If the knockout comes it comes.”
Having once again wrapped a successful training camp at his headquarters, Fundamentals 19 Gym in Bell Gardens, California. Trinidad assured us that his preparation for this fight will pay off to start off the new year right.
“My preparation has been great, long days at the gym, sparring, running. Going back to the drawing board and adjusting but I am ready,” Trinidad said about his preparation.
Rated at the top of the featherweight division, Trinidad is ranked second by the IBF and sixth by WBC as the 28-year-old looks for this to be his year. Fighting under the 360 Promotions banner and headlining UFC Fight Pass, Trinidad’s promoter Tom Loeffler has Trinidad on the path to a successful 2025.
“I came from nothing. Everything I got, I got with my blood, sweat, and tears, along with my team. We started with nothing and now we are getting some recognition, all god willing we get that title shot this year,” Trinidad said. “All these fighters have had their own struggle but for me I started my career when I was 24 years old and that journey has been long, but we are here now and can’t wait to claim one of those belts,” Trinidad added.
“Omar is number two in the IBF. I really think he broke through last year now that he is rated in the sanctioning bodies, I really think he can fight any of the champions,” Promoter Tom Loeffler said about Trinidad.
Last year was an active year for Trinidad as he scored three victories in scoring knockouts over Jose Perez and Viktor Slavinskyi. Trinidad is coming off a twelve round unanimous decision over Hector Andres Sosa.
“Last year I got some good wins and helped me get into the top 10. This will be the year for me,” Trinidad said.
Now Trinidad gets ready to take on the Filipino as Plania scored a knockout over Deivi Julio in his last fight. Plania has been in the ring with the likes of current IBF featherweight champion Angelo Leo, Raeese Aleem, and former champion Juan Carlos Payano.
“I know he is a well-seasoned fighter has been through a lot of big fights. He has been there; he has 35 fights total. I know he is coming with everything, and we are going to put on a good fight,” Omar Trinidad on his opponent Mike Plania.
Trinidad hopes that a victory over Plania will be the beginning of a successful year as he looks to make his splash at the 126-featherweight division. In hopes for a crack at top names in the division which include current WBC champion Rey Vargas, WBO champion Rafael Espinoza, and IBF champion Angelo Leo.
“After I win this fight, I’m going to stay active and ready. I know Angelo Leo has a fight coming up but you never know anything can happen. We are just going to stay active and waiting for the opportunity to see who calls us,” Trinidad stated. “At this point, I’m willing to take on any fighter but I would like to fight for that green belt (WBC) but a fight with Angelo Leo would be the best,”
“That is a tremendous fight Omar Trinidad and Angelo Leo, really against any of the champions those are great fights,” Tom Loeffler on matching Trinidad with the champions.
Other top names and potential fights at the featherweight division include interim champion Brandon Figueroa, undefeated Bruce Carrington, Nick Ball, Carlos Castro, former champions Stephen Fulton, Robeisy Ramirez, and Luis Alberto Lopez.
“I think everybody at 126 is a tough fight. Even the guys in the top ten, the Bruce Carrington’s, Carlos Castro, Fulton, and the champions. Those are all good fights,” Trinidad on the featherweight landscape.
The King of LA, Omar Trinidad looks to make a statement this Friday night fighting practically at home. Hailing from the inter-city Boyle Heights area, Trinidad expects his Boyle Heights contingency to make the 3 and half mile drive to Commerce down the fully congested 5 south freeway to start the weekend.
“I feel that all eyes are on me this time. I’m headlining against a good opponent and expect a good victory,”
Trinidad promised victory and is ready for all comers at 126.
“I’m giving you the Trinidad Show. Blood, Sweat and Entertainment it’s either going to be a highlight reel knockout or a great night of boxing,” Trinidad promised. “I’m ready for all the names in my division,” Trinidad concluded.
