MB Daily News Update July 21: PBBM eyes a ‘Masagana’ throwback

It’s a throwback program that could save the country’s future amid the feared food supply crisis.

Enter “Masagana 150”, a proposed program from the Department of Agriculture (DA) that aims to facilitate the harvest of 150 cavans of rice per hectare of land.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who temporarily took on the portfolio of DA secretary appears to have named the program  after “Masagana 99”, which was a similar endeavor of his late father, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

Masagana is the Filipino word for abundant.

DA Undersecretary-designate for consumer and political affairs Kristine Evangelista said they are currently studying the implementation of the Masagana 150 in the country.

In another policy matter that’s closer to the country’s shores than it’s farmlands, the Marcos administration seems to be poised to continue the rosy relations that the previous administration had with regional power China.

Department of National Defense Officer-in-Charge Jose Faustino, Jr. had this to say, going as far to share that Marcos wants to strengthen Manila and Beijing’s military alliance.

“During the time of President Duterte, we saw the collaboration with China in opening up other avenues of cooperation in the West Philippine Sea and I think it’s the same policy of the President (Marcos) when it comes to our foreign policy. So basically the same, we are for peaceful resolution of the conflict,” Faustino said.
