Rosie Fortescue's beauty tutorial: perfecting the strobing technique for flattering, luminous highlights
I think that contouring has got a bit out of hand recently. There are so many different ways to sculpt your face now, Oval shape, square jaw, clown contouring and it all seems very high maintenance.
Unless you are Kim Kardashian, you’re unlikely to want to wear that much makeup everyday. I’ve gone for the antidote to contouring today – Strobing. Here’s how you can do the same.
I love strobing because it is far more natural than contouring and just adds more radiance. Contouring can look a bit harsh in the day, but strobing adds definition in a much for subtle way. It’s almost the anti-contour, and encourages you to enhance what you already have rather than sculpt away.
Bringing extra light to your face is also particularly brilliant if you have dry skin like me. It can help your skin to look dewy and luminous, whilst it enhances your best features.
Strobing works best on a lighter base, and with well prepped skin. I love the Nuxe crème fraiche de beaute enrichie moisturizer (£25). As I have dry skin, something hydrating like the Clarins skin illusion natural radiance foundation (£27) works really well for me.
I’m so excited to share some of my favourite products which are perfect for strobing and add lots of light to your face. The Givenchy Mister Light in Mister Meringue (£24) is a brush on concealer and highlight in one that is never far from my makeup bag.
I also love the Clarins Instant light radiance boosting complexion (£26.50) because you can use it so many different way that it’s really useful. You can use it as a base under any makeup, mixed in with a foundation to make it much dewier and also on the skin in the high points of your face. It’s a must have! It comes in a pink and a bronze toned one, so there’s definitely something for all skin tones.
In the photos you can really see how glossy my skin looks. Another product I would recommend is the Elizabeth Arden flawless finish correcting and highlighting perfector pen (£23) to help get rid of dark circles and also add lots of light to the skin.
On my skin, I prefer to use creams and liquids because they seem to work the best with my dry skin, but if you have oilier skin I would recommend the Guerlain meteorites compact (£40). Firstly, it’s gorgeous! Secondly, it adds light to any areas of your face where you apply it, and it doesn’t feel heavy.
My tips for strobing?
Always look in the mirror and really look at your individual face shape. Think about the high points and any areas that you want to look lighter and brighter. I’d recommend the inner corners of your eyes, your brow bone, the cupid’s bow and the tops of your cheek bones to start with, and it’s always fun to play around with makeup and see what suits you best.
Step 1: Use a lighter base and work it into the skin with your fingers.
Step 2: Apply your highlighter onto the tops of the cheekbones, which should help to sculpt your face and add a lot of light. You can use your finger tips to really help the product melt into the skin
Step 3: Apply some illuminating product to your cupid’s bow, on your chin, down the bottom of your nose
Step 4: You can also apply product in the inner corner of your eyes and under your brow bone to make your eyes look bigger and brighter.
