Tikhanovskaya proposed to recognize the Belarusian OMON as terrorists
Former presidential candidate in Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya proposed to recognize the OMON and the main department for combating organized crime and corruption (GUBOPiK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic as terrorist organizations. She came up with such an initiative during a meeting with Dutch Foreign Minister Stefan Blok, the press service of the politician reports on the Telegram channel.
“Since GUBOPiK and OMON have turned into criminal gangs, we are starting the procedure for recognizing these organizations as extremist or terrorist,” Tikhanovskaya said. She warned that all employees who do not leave before the end of the investigation will be recognized as accomplices and will be subject to sanctions, and their property will be seized.
Only those security officials who have gone over to the side of the people can count on amnesty, the opposition leader added.
Earlier, Tikhanovskaya called on the European Union to expand sanctions against the country’s authorities. She supported the idea of imposing economic sanctions on businesses associated with President Alexander Lukashenko and the oligarchs close to him.
Protests in Belarus began in late August after the election of the head of state. The protesters demand the resignation of the entire leadership of the country, new elections, as well as an end to violence from the security forces and the prosecution of those who brutally dispersed the first protests after the elections and tortured the detainees.
