Kacey Musgraves Delivers Runway-Ready Live ‘Pageant Material’
Few country artists have made an initial impact on the overall genre in such a dramatic manner as Kacey Musgraves, a Texas songwriter who came to Nashville assured of the arrows she wished to follow—and charming a league of critics, fans, and Grammy voters along the way.
Musgraves released her eagerly awaited major-label sophomore set, Pageant Material, at the end of June; taking a route exploring classic country vibes as well as the ins and outs of small-town life. In this exclusive performance, the singer delivers a spirited rendition of her title track, which showcases her wry/sharp writing to full effect.
“Pageant Material is a more satirical, aloof, fun song,” Musgraves says of the tune. “It is kind of a reference to the fact that women – especially in the industry – are definitely expected to be …what’s the word? Behaviorally perfect? If you lose, you’ve still got to smile.
“Sometimes in that way, the music business and the world can be sort of pageant-esque,” she continues. “But really…it’s just kind of poking fun at me for not being a complete role model all of the time.”
