Autism: What is Autism? - Mental Health Awareness
Autism, or or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.
While living with autism can bring challenges depending on it's severity, the autism diagnosis itself is not a one size fits all matter. Autism spectrum disorder is still often misunderstood by the public which is why we are diving into it on today's mental health awareness video. We now know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, and each person with autism can have unique strengths and challenges.
Autistic children have difficulties with social interaction, display problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and exhibit repetitive behaviors or narrow, obsessive interests. These behaviors can range in impact from mild to disabling. Autism varies widely in its severity and symptoms and may go unrecognized, especially in mildly affected children or when more debilitating handicaps mask it. Scientists aren’t certain what causes autism, but it’s likely that both genetics and environment play a role.
