Soccer fans turn violent outside Avaya Stadium
An estimated 90 San Jose Police Department officers responded to a violent skirmish that erupted Sunday afternoon outside of Avaya Stadium between fans of two Mexican soccer clubs set to play a match there. Fans of Club America and Monarcas Morelia “were involved in an altercation that became violent,” San Jose Police said in a statement detailing the incident, after they began hurling rocks and bottles at one another. Officer Albert Morales, a spokesman for the San Jose Police Department, said that 40 officers were assigned to work security at the stadium for the match but that approximately 50 others were called in to respond to the altercation.
