5 implications of a successful PDP convention to APC
The national convention of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) is slated to hold on Wednesday, August 17 in Port Harcourt, Rivers state and so many things are hanging onto that day, including fate of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Barring unforeseen circumstances, party members from across the country will gather in the south-south city to elect new officials into top positions in the opposition party which has been marred by leadership struggles.
PDP convention
Should the party overcome the court injunctions and disunity currently bedeviling it and manage to hold a successful convention, this would have implications for the APC which is also having its own massive internal problems. Below are some of the matters that would arise from a successful PDP convention.
1. Formidable opposition
With a new leader, who is recognised and accepted nationwide, the PDP will now provide the much needed opposition that many Nigerians admit that the party has not been able to since last year because of in-fighting.
Should the party be able to reach an agreement with factional leader, Ali Modu Sheriff, then its newfound unity would not augur well for the APC.
2. Loss of upcoming state elections
The PDP could achieve nationwide acceptance among Nigerians with a successful convention and thus challenge heavily in the upcoming elections in Edo and Ondo states between September and November.
With many Nigerians already displeased with APC leadership across the country, a successful convention could pose big dangers for APC across the length and breadth of the federation. This is an immediate implication that the APC would need to worry about.
3. Outright defeat at the centre
If a successful convention is witnessed on Wednesday, the APC could be faced with the loss of the presidency after defeat at the polls in the general elections in 2019. The reason is simple. The PDP, by virtue of a strong and respectable leadership, could make Nigerians to start putting their fate in another party, given the current challenges facing the ruling party.
4. Mass exodus of members
If the PDP gets its act right at the convention, then the APC will have serious task on its hand to prevent its members from jumping ship. While the APC does not have a leadership crisis, many members are concerned that the ruling party is receiving serious backlash from Nigerians and this could serve as enough reason to move to another strong platform, if it is available.
5. Eventual death of the APC
A successful convention that turns around the fortunes of the PDP could sound the knell for the APC. Presently, APC is suffering from internal crisis that it if not solved quickly could balkanise the party. Should the PDP become stronger, then the APC would have a problem, especially if it looses at the centre in the next general election in 2019.

Meanwhile, Abuja federal high court judge, Justice Okon Abang has accused the PDP and senator Ben Obi of flouting court orders. Abang said Obi disrespected the court by going to another court in Port Harcourt to file same motion while the PDP, he said refused to obey several orders that it should maintain status quo while a case brought before the court by factional chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff is concluded.
