Court affirms PDP convention must not hold, warns INEC chairman, police

– Justice Okon Abang has affirmed that his earlier ruling stopping the PDP national convention on Wednesday, August 17 still stands

– Abang also warned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to stay away from the convention

The Federal High Court in Abuja has again ruled that the proposed national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP must not hold on Wednesday, August 17.

In his ruling today, August 16, Justice Okon Abang said the convention planned by the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the party must not hold tomorrow.

Abang also issued an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising any convention or any other conference in such manner for the same purpose.

He also said that failure to comply with the order will attract disciplinary action against the party or individuals involved.

He also ordered the inspector general of police to ensure that the directive given by the court is adhered to.

Abang also ordered that all the processes and rulings of the court be distributed to parties involved, especially INEC and the IGP, Ibrahim Idris.

He then adjourned the matter to Wednesday, September 7 for further hearing of the substantive suit in the matter.

A national convention is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, August 17, in Port Harcourt.

The convention planned by the Makarfi-led faction of the PDP was suspended by Abang yesterday, August 15.

Abang’s ruling comes after one of the parties joined in the matter, Senator Ben Obi approached the Port Harcourt division of the Federal High Court to give an interim injunction on the Abuja division’s order.
