Binta Ayofemi explores black utopia at YBCA
Part of this month’s Third Thursdays in Yerba Buena, which also features free gallery admission and later hours, is a live performance of Binta Ayofemi’s new piece, “Untitled (Chorus).”
Ayofemi, who got her master’s of fine arts in studio art from Stanford and whose work has appeared at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, resists easy categorization, but one enduring interest is in recontextualizing public urban spaces so that users engage with them more thoughtfully, with greater awareness of both how they act on us and we with them.
In October, she’ll be exploring this theme further in Oakland, with an exhibition to be held, she says, “at a series of outdoor sites.”
