Semien, Davis spark offense as A’s beat Mariners
Oakland showed up Friday night with the American League’s fourth fewest runs, fourth lowest batting average and lowest on-base percentage.
Even when the A’s reeled off three consecutive wins earlier this week, they did so on the strength of their pitching.
Semien matched his career high with four hits — all hard-hit, line-drive singles — and Davis established a career high with his 28th homer.
[...] the A’s, wobbling along in this disheartening season, will take offensive noise where they can get it — especially against a Mariners team suddenly in the thick of the wild-card race, after winning 14 of its previous 21 games (including six straight before Friday night).
“No right-handed hitter hits the ball out down the right-field line, not here,” manager Bob Melvin said.
In each of the first three innings, he walked the leadoff hitter.
[...] in each of those three innings, Manaea slipped away thanks to an inning-ending double play.
[...] the A’s offense resurfaced in the bottom of the inning.
Liam Hendriks, Ryan Dull and Ryan Madson each pitched a scoreless inning to preserve the win for Manaea, who is starting to validate the hype.
