Here's how the Department of Transportation is trying to improve transit flow in major cities (GOOG)

The Department of Transportation is taking steps to help improve traffic in major cities.
DoT Secretary Anthony Foxx has announced that the department has partnered with Alphabet's Sidewalk Labs to design Flow, an analytics system that looks at traffic patterns in cities to help improve the transit flow.
Flow will pull data from the seven finalists in the DoT's smart city challenge, designed to create innovative and connected transportation. Those finalists are:
- Austin, Texas
- Columbus, Ohio
- Denver, Colorado
- Kansas City, Missouri
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Portland, Oregon
- San Francisco, California
The winner of this challenge will receive $40 million through a federal grant and $10 from Vulcan, a company owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen that focuses on reducing vehicles' carbon emissions. Sidewalk Labs will also install 100 Wi-Fi kiosks in the winning city, which the DoT will announce in June.
