Kurultai elections to be held in August, Tokayev says
Tengrinews.kz — Elections to Kazakhstan’s new Parliament, the Kurultai, will take place in August. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced this today in Astana at an award ceremony for scientists, citing Akorda.
“As Head of State, I consider it extremely important to inform the public in advance about events of major significance for our country. Therefore, immediately after the Constitution enters into force, I will sign a decree calling elections to the unicameral Kurultai. The elections will take place in August of this year. I am deliberately announcing this in advance so that the parties have a clear planning horizon and sufficient time to prepare properly for the election campaign. In this way, the parties will have enough time — about five months — to carry out the necessary work with voters,” the Head of State said.
The President noted that the elections to the Kurultai would mark the beginning of a large-scale “restructuring” of Kazakhstan’s entire political system.
“At the same time, as I have repeatedly stated, it is extremely important that the political and economic reforms we are carrying out be closely linked with positive ‘mental’ changes in society,” he added.
