Old 10,000 tenge banknotes can still be used — National Bank extends deadline

Tengrinews.kz – The National Bank of Kazakhstan has extended the period of parallel circulation for 10,000 tenge banknotes. They can be used until June 2027, citing the National Bank’s press service.
According to the National Bank, the decision was made taking into account proposals from the Association of Financiers of Kazakhstan and provides for the continued use of old-design banknotes in payments for an additional year, as well as their gradual replacement with new banknotes.
The National Bank continues the phased issuance of the new “Saka Style” banknote series, which uses a parallel circulation mechanism to ensure a gradual replacement of old banknotes with new ones.

"After the end of the parallel circulation period, all banks and Kazpost will exchange old banknotes for new ones for another three years, while branches of the National Bank will exchange them indefinitely," the National Bank said.

They also reminded that during the period of parallel circulation, both old and new banknotes are legal tender and must be accepted at face value throughout Kazakhstan for all types of payments, transfers, and bank account deposits.
Earlier, it was reported that the срок of use for old 10,000 tenge banknotes in Kazakhstan was planned to be extended for another year. This was announced by the Chairman of the National Bank Timur Suleimenov while answering journalists’ questions.
On December 25, 2025, the National Bank announced the issuance of a newly designed 500 tenge banknote. However, these banknotes will enter mass circulation in the second quarter of 2026, as additional time is required to deliver them to all regions of the country and adapt equipment such as ATMs, terminals, and other cash-handling machines.
