Václav Klaus for the Impian Verlang about the book "Merkels Werk - Unser Untergang"
1. Mr President, in your contribution to “Merkels Werk – Unser Untergang”, you assess the Merkel era from an external perspective. Which of her political decisions do you consider having had the most consequential impact on Europe as a whole?
Angela Merkel visibly shifted the CDU politics to the left. I often asked her: “Why do you have two social democratic parties in Germany?” She pretended not to understand. So I added: “One is the standard SPD, and the other is the transformed CDU”. I stress this because it was her fundamental, lasting contribution to German politics. When you ask about concrete political decision, there are at least two of them: the elimination of nuclear energy and “wir schaffen das”. Both have changed not just Germany, but Europe.
