"Very pleased": Jamie Redknapp blown away by 41-touch Arsenal star after derby win vs Tottenham
Former Premier League star Jamie Redknapp has heaped praise on Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres following the 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
The Gunners had played out back-to-back draws in the English top-flight, and they had to respond with a commanding performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
They did exactly so. Gyokeres had a fine outing upfront, scoring a brace in the second half.
The Swede put the Gunners into a 2-1 lead with a fantastic strike from the edge of the box.
He capped his fantastic display with the Gunners’ fourth goal in stoppage time.
Speaking after the game, Redknapp was definitely pleased with the Swede’s outing at Spurs.
The 52-year-old said that Gyokeres was too strong and bullied Micky Van de Ven.
He added that it was a big day for the 27-year-old, who was excellent in the north London derby.
Redknapp said: “Gyokeres kept on pulling on to Van de Ven, he was too strong for him and he bullied him.
“I do not want to be a killjoy, but it was almost hard to assess because of how poor Tottenham were.
“But a big day for him, he was excellent, the touches, I am very pleased for him because he has had a lot of stick.”
Aside from his stellar brace, Gyokeres was heavily involved in the derby with 41 touches, completing 18 passes.
The former Sporting CP man also won five duels, made four recoveries and registered one key tackle tracking back.
His hold-up play was a mixed bag, but it was undoubtedly his best performance in the Gunners’ shirt thus far.
Gyokeres has now bagged 10 goals in the league season for Arsenal and has 15 goals in all competitions.
His form has been splendid since the New Year with 10 goal involvements, and he needs to keep it going.
Arsenal’s next league game will be against London rivals Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Gyokeres should relish the contest, having scored and assisted during the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against the Blues.
